Northern Arizona University Kitt Recital Hall
Elevating the arts
Performing arts programs flourish in thoughtfully designed spaces. Spaces that balance excellent technological and acoustical features with comfortable learning and listening environments. Before our renovation of the Kitt Recital Hall, Northern Arizona University’s (NAU) performing arts program was conducted in an aging, 100-year-old building that was an impediment to faculty, students and audiences. The new recital hall, completed in February 2019, celebrates the University’s premier music program while engaging the community.
With equal emphasis on cultivating the heart and mind, NAU faculty collaborated with the design team to create an iconic building element on campus that acts as a capstone for the west end of a major circulation axis, greeting students and the greater community. A transparent glass base and copper cantilever form a welcoming arrival experience that integrates with the rest of campus. The interior of the 255-seat recital hall leverages state of the art theatre equipment with adjustable variable acoustics to support a range of performing ensembles. A pre-function space and rehearsal rooms complete the 27,000 SF building.
