US Coast Guard FOL Cold Bay New Hangar Facility
The Coast Guard utilizes one MH-60T helicopter, housed in a hangar recently renovated. The new project provides a hangar to house a second MH-60T helicopter, which is built adjacent to the existing hangar.
The Design-Build Team’s approach was based on providing cost-effective and innovative design solutions which follows the RFP. The innovations proposed by our team included steel products with recycled content to respond to environmental concerns, efficient light fixtures limiting the building’s energy consumption, and the primary subcontractor is a pre-engineered metal building dealer/installer, which allowed our team to streamline the structure design.
The new 6,529 SF hangar was designed using methods of assembly that have been proven by the existing hangar to withstand Cold Bay’s extreme climate. The metal siding system is sealed at all joints and penetrations as an additional safeguard against weather intrusion. The exterior wall assembly extends from a 24” high concrete wainscot base that surrounds the perimeter of the hangar. The concrete wainscot and wall connection details are designed to provide corrosion protection and to eliminate air and water infiltration. An interior office, mechanical room, and restroom are included and acoustically insulated from the Hangar Bay. This project received a Small Business SAME Design Excellence Gold Award in 2017. Cost: $4.2M.
This project also incorporated several sustainable features, which included:
- Optimize energy performance of 14%
- Recycled materials
- Indoor air quality protection during construction
- Low emitting materials
- No CFC based refrigerants
- Moisture control
- No outdoor irrigation
