Prairie Island Indian Community – Tinta Wita Tipi Senior Living Community
Honoring culture by engaging the elderly
Over the past decade, RSP has designed a variety of spaces for the Prairie Island Indian Community. Mostly hospitality related spaces that include restaurants, hotels, spas and more. The experience has proven invaluable as RSP recently completed the first elder assisted living center to serve the Tribal community.
The 38,000 SF single-story elder center is being developed in partnership with Ebenezer Management Services. The goal of the project was to incorporate Dakota culture and community within an assisted living environment. RSP’s existing understanding of the community, combined with hospitality and healthcare experience, has evolved the design into a building that celebrates Native American culture, connects with the surrounding natural landscape and supports best-in-class care for aging in place. The project encourages continued community involvement and family interactions.
Blurring the lines between exterior and interior, the building’s location and form highlight the surrounding 18 acres of tribal land. Pathways and landscaping, including a courtyard garden, further connect the structure and residents with the land. Inside, the program encourages connections and community. A centrally located dining and lounge area incorporates cultural artwork and casual seating. Each of the 20 one-bedroom assisted living apartments feature full kitchens and private patios to ensure key aspects of independence. Views to the landscape are provided throughout the project with thoughtfully placed sunrooms, windows and operable glass French doors.
