Mayo Outpatient Hematology / BMT / CAR-T Treatment Center
Improving the Patient Care Model
Mayo Clinic is renowned as one of the best healthcare providers in the world. They turned to RSP to co-create a new Rochester Outpatient Treatment Center for three medical practices: hematology, bone marrow transplant (BMT) and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR-T) cell therapy. These departments were dispersed across multiple inpatient floors but shared medical expertise – treating blood disease. RSP’s design brings the practices together in an outpatient setting, recaptures much-needed inpatient space, and ultimately improves the patient care model.
The new Outpatient Treatment Center sits on the ground level, making the design a win for ease of access and improved patient experience. Given the multiple treatment plans administered, the design includes a mix of treatment room types. The design team introduced beds into several rooms, rethinking the typical standard for outpatient settings and prioritizing patient comfort for longer-duration treatments. In addition, treatment rooms with reclining chairs serve patients with shorter-duration infusion treatments. Patient restrooms are adjacent or connected to the treatment rooms, making the space more comfortable for patients and their families.
Staff areas are an integral part of the design. The nursing staff is conveniently located near the treatment rooms at a pair of nurse stations and treatment supply levels are efficiently managed with two PAR Level Medication Rooms. Bursts of color and carefully selected artwork give the facility a sense of energy. Conference and huddle rooms equipped with telemedicine technology allow practitioners to collaborate with experts across the top-ranked Mayo Clinic network easily.
