Hubbard Radio
Five unique brands, all under one roof
They couldn’t be more different. One is hard rock. One all oldies. Another sports talk. Yet each of the five distinct radio stations is owned and operated under Hubbard Broadcasting. When Hubbard expanded in Phoenix, the five stations were spread over the valley in three locations. Until we designed a ground-up 30,000 SF studio/office space that met each station’s distinct needs. A progressive, dynamic workplace with access to state-of-the-art production and on-air studios. Plus dramatic views to the Camelback Mountains with direct line-of-sight to the broadcaster’s radio tower.
The design for the building began as an efficient rectangle that opened up to take advantage of the views. A two-story “canyon” runs through the center, creating the heart of the building. Unique exterior features include an outdoor deck and performance promenade for visiting artists. The entry features a guitar inspired wood ceiling anchored to a grand stair. A large skylight allows daylight to play across the stairs throughout the day. Inside, there are twelve studios for the five stations, each built-to-suit with space to activate their own unique personalities and brands. Shared spaces exist for marketing, sales, human resources, accounting and executive offices. During visioning sessions with our design team, staff resonated with raw materials and exposed structure. Our design challenge was to showcase infrastructure while paying close attention to acoustics. Broadcast elements add personality and style throughout.
