Hotel Indigo Minneapolis Northstar Downtown
A Fusion of History and Modern Hospitality
The Hotel Indigo renovation is a transformative repositioning of the historic Northstar Center complex in Downtown Minneapolis. Formerly home to the Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo is the first component completed in the renovation of the iconic development, which includes office, retail and a parking garage. RSP’s concept revitalizes the area, once an industrial mill town along the Mississippi River, by seamlessly incorporating the area’s mid-century origins into a contemporary lifestyle hotel.
RSP designed the 17-story, 218-room Hotel Indigo remodel to preserve the history behind the original 1963 Northstar Inn through experience and materiality. Once hidden through the edge of a coffee shop, access to the hotel is now an inviting, mid-century concept. Guests can interact with the transparent entrance under a porte cochère, revisiting the original entry sequence of the 1960s. A welcoming, layered lobby with terrazzo floors, ornate lighting and a brick fireplace supports a more mobile approach to work, with comfortable lounge suites that accommodate the needs of today’s lifestyle travelers. The Star Bar & Bistro sits adjacent to the lobby, operated by local restaurateur Placemaker Hospitality. This culinary destination features American cuisine with a French flair, emphasizing locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant offers two distinct spaces, each boasting unique styles and menus.
The design team celebrated many of the design elements of the existing property’s eclectic past within the 218 updated queen and king guest suites. Custom furniture and throwback art feed into the vintage vibe. Hotel guests and office tenants enjoy additional amenities including a 24-hour fitness center, modern meeting spaces and a rooftop garden.
Carefully integrated into the larger complex, the design creates cohesion between the various components of the larger mixed-use renovation. With meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to revitalizing the neighborhood, RSP’s design is helping to create an unparalleled experience for guests and contribute to the cultural and architectural richness of the city.
