The former pediatric intensive care unit was dark, crowded and, truth be told, a bit depressing. Patient rooms were separated by only a curtain. Privacy was at a premium. Stress was high. Our experiential design approach revealed the need to feel “embraced.” It directed our design and provided a positive platform for caregivers. Design elements such as a personality wall where staff and family members can post and draw pictures, encourage staff to embrace the patients, families, and each other.
