Cummins
Designing a legacy
Established in 1919, Cummins Inc has established quite the legacy in the field of engine design. As technology continues to evolve, their needs as a company have shifted, requiring them to update their maintenance facilities. RSP’s experts in distribution design and corporate repositioning came together to create a design plan for the company’s engine maintenance and repair facilities in Atlanta. As the central architect for the project, RSP provided design support for ground up facilities, renovations and development of program standards and prototypes. The final design of the Atlanta prototype—the first of its kind —blends function, aesthetics and high-tech efficiency.
RSP designed each repair space within the Atlanta facility as high-tech “surgical suites.” Each bay has its own micro-climate, complete with all the tools the mechanic may need. Water-saving technology, LED lighting and high ceilings in the parts warehouse and repair garage allow for efficiency while keeping budget in mind. Staying privy to the requirements of large vehicles, RSP allowed enough space for two 10-ton overhead crane systems and many portable lifts. The aisles are wide, allowing equipment and teams to move freely. High ceilings and multiple windows fill the building with natural light.
In the lobby and public spaces, RSP created a design plan that highlights an elevated level of service. Each space is connected visually by colors, textures and flow. But the same spaces also have their own environment. It is intuitive. Customers know where they can sit down and relax or find assistance. Aesthetic details make it easy to for customers and staff members alike to navigate through the space. A similar design plan was also implemented in the warehouse area. On the exterior of the building, corrugated concrete in a sawtooth design creates shadows and sculptural moments. Materials like glass, steel and concrete both provides an industrial edge and a clean, simple façade. Translucent panels near the entryway create a feeling of elegance. The design balances beauty and efficiency with a modern touch. In other words, the design truly embodies Cummins as a business.
